The share of U.S. employees using artificial intelligence at work continues to increase, though adoption remains uneven across industries, roles and organizations, according to a recent Gallup Workforce study.
Gallup found that 45 percent of U.S. employees reported using AI at work at least a few times a year in the third quarter of 2025, up from 40 percent in the second quarter. More frequent use also rose, with 23 percent saying they used AI a few times a week or more, compared with 19 percent previously. Daily use increased modestly, reaching 10 percent of the workforce.
“The percentage of U.S. employees who reported using AI at work at least a few times a year increased from 40 percent to 45 percent between the second and third quarters of 2025,” the Gallup Workforce study says.
Adoption varied sharply by role and industry. Employees in knowledge-based jobs were significantly more likely to report using AI than those in frontline positions. Gallup found that 76 percent of employees in technology or information systems, 58 percent in finance and 57 percent in professional services used AI at least a few times a year. By comparison, 33 percent of retail employees, 37 percent of healthcare workers and 38 percent of manufacturing employees reported similar levels of use.
The study also highlighted uncertainty around organizational AI strategies. In the third quarter, 37 percent of employees said their organization had implemented AI to improve productivity, efficiency or quality. Forty percent said their organization had not implemented AI, while 23 percent said they did not know. Individual contributors were more likely than managers or leaders to report uncertainty, suggesting some AI use may be occurring without clear communication or formal strategy.
Among employees who used AI, the most common applications included consolidating information, generating ideas and learning new things. Chatbots and virtual assistants were the most widely used tools, followed by AI writing and editing software. More advanced tools, such as coding assistants and analytics platforms, were concentrated among frequent users.
According to Gallup, broader AI adoption is closely linked to managerial support and clearer integration of AI into employees’ roles.
