For only the second time, Gartner has released a Magic Quadrant for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies (BOAT), evaluating vendors providing platforms that coordinate business processes across enterprise applications, automation tools, AI agents and human workers. The Stamford, Conn.-based technology consultancy named Appian, Pega, ServiceNow and UiPath as ‘Leaders’ in the segment.
The report reflects a shift in enterprise automation from technologies that execute individual tasks toward platforms capable of managing end-to-end business processes involving multiple technologies and participants.
Gartner defines BOAT as a consolidated software platform that orchestrates and automates business processes of varying complexity and autonomy. Its definition emphasizes AI agent orchestration, governance, multiagent coordination and connectivity across enterprise systems.
In addition to the four Leaders, the report assessed 16 other vendors, including Automation Anywhere, AWS, Boomi, Bizagi, Camunda, Flowable, IBM, Mendix, Microsoft, n8n, Nintex, OutSystems, Salesforce, SAP, SS&C Blue Prism and Workato. Gartner evaluates vendors on their Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision.
For enterprises evaluating automation investments, the emergence of BOAT reflects a broader convergence of RPA, workflow management, integration and agentic AI. Rather than replacing existing automation investments, orchestration platforms can coordinate them as components of larger business processes while providing centralized monitoring and governance.
