Gartner IDs Agentic AI as Top Tech Trend for 2025

While agentic AI may have seemed to be a big deal in 2024, the coming year will be even bigger for the technology, according to Gartner. The Stamford, Conn.-based advisory and research firm has agentic AI sitting atop its list of the 10 most important tech trends for 2025.

According to the report—2025 Top Strategic Technology Trends—the rise of AI agents will continue, pushing other related AI trends, like governance and security. CIOs are beginning to understand the potential AI agents have to leverage generative AI in automation efforts. By 2028, Gartner predicts in the report, at least 15 percent of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI, up from 0 percent this year (despite the buzz around the tech in 2024).

“Organizations have long wanted to promote high-performing teams, improve cross-functional collaboration and coordinate issues across team networks” said Tom Coshow, senior director and analyst at Gartner. “Agentic AI has the potential to perform as a highly competent teammate by providing insights from derivative events that are often not visible to human teammates.”

In addition to agentic AI and other AI-related tech, Gartner identified post-quantum cryptography, energy-efficient computing and neurological enhancement as other trends to watch in 2025.
