Meta Acquires Manus to Bolster Access to General-Purpose AI Agents

Just before the new year, Meta announced it had acquired Manus, a Singapore-based company building general-purpose AI agents aimed at both consumer and business use cases. According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal is valued in excess of $2 billion.

Manus has positioned its technology as an execution layer for advanced AI models. The company says its agent can independently handle workflows including market research, coding and data analysis, with a focus on automating tasks from end to end rather than relying on a string of isolated prompts.

Manus launched its first general AI agent earlier this year, and the company claims its service is currently used by millions of individuals and businesses. Meta said it plans to scale access to the technology across its consumer and enterprise-facing products.

“Joining Meta allows us to build on a stronger, more sustainable foundation without changing how Manus works or how decisions are made,” said Xiao Hong, CEO of Manus. “We’re excited about what the future holds with Meta and Manus working together and we will continue to iterate the product and serve users that have defined Manus from the beginning.”

Despite the WSJ report, Meta did not disclose financial terms of the agreement, but the move reflects broader industry momentum around agentic AI and its potential to deliver measurable productivity gains in real-world business environments.
