Last week, The White House issued a set of principles it hopes will foster and guide the development of artificial intelligence for companies in the U.S. The document, part of the ongoing Artificial Intelligence for the American People initiative launched by the Trump administration nearly a year ago, will certainly impact companies that develop RPA solutions and those that implement them.
The memorandum provides non-binding guidance for future regulation of AI applications deployed outside the federal government (it does not apply to federal agencies). According to U.S. CTO Michael Kratsios, the principles are designed to ensure public engagement, limit regulatory overreach and promote trustworthy technology.
“Innovations in artificial intelligence are creating personalized cancer treatments, improving search and rescue disaster response, making our roadways safer with automated vehicles, and have the potential for so much more,” Kratsios said in a Bloomberg News op-ed. “We can advance emerging technology in a way that reflects our values of freedom, human rights and respect for human dignity.”
The document details 10 principles it says should guide federal agencies as they consider regulation of AI-related technologies and their growth:
- Public Trust in AI
- Public Participation
- Scientific Integrity and Information Quality
- Risk Assessment and Management
- Benefits and Costs
- Flexibility
- Fairness and Non-Discrimination
- Disclosure and Transparency
- Safety and Security
- Interagency Coordination
