Low-code automation platform provider Appian announced it has opened an office in Japan. The MacLean, Va.-based company said a physical presence in Japan is necessary to address the opportunity for automation to pick up the slack in a market struggling from a rapid decline in the size of its labor force.

The company noted a Forrester study that found 75 percent of all application development will use low-code platforms by the end of 2021, up from 44 percent last year. In a separate study, Gartner said the low-code market in Japan will grow 21 percent this year.

Appian has hired software veteran Shinsaku Hashimoto to lead the local team of sales and service personnel.
