The U.S. Department of Commerce is establishing a committee that can advise the President and other U.S. federal agencies on a range of issues related to artificial intelligence. As a driving force behind the current and future iterations of process automation, how the federal government treats AI will have a significant impact on businesses in the RPA and intelligent automation industries.

In an announcement detailing the formation of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC), Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo also sought nominations from the AI community for candidates to serve on the panel of advisors.

The NAIAC is the result of a law passed in 2020 called the National AI Initiative Act. A joint effort among the Commerce Department, the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Attorney General’s office, the Director of National Intelligence and the departments of Defense, State, and Energy, the committee’s goals will include advising the President and others on the current state of U.S. competitiveness in the space, the science of AI and its impact on the workforce in the U.S.

“We have seen major advances in the design, development, and use of AI, especially in the past several years,” said Eric Lander, White House Science Advisor and OSTP Director. “We must be sure that these advances are matched by similar progress in ensuring that AI is trustworthy, and that it ensures fairness and protections for civil rights. I look forward to working with and learning from this committee.”
