A team of Google, Meta, Stripe and other tech executives have launched a startup that aims to build what it characterizes as an operating system for AI agents. The San Francisco-based company, called /dev/agents, also announced it has raised $56 million in seed funding, which puts the startup’s valuation at around $500 million.
David Singleton, former CTO of Stripe and vice president of engineering for Google Android is one of the company’s co-founders. Others include Meta Platforms CTO Ficus Kirkpatrick and Hugo Barra, another Google and Meta vet with CEO experience.
The notion of using AI agents to automate a gamut of tasks and processes has gained significant momentum in the past year and has been identified by Gartner as the top technology trend for 2025. AI agents will be able to surpass the abilities of Chat GPT and other generative AI tools because they have the ability to understand context, plan workflows, connect to external tools and data, and execute actions that progress toward a defined goal. The /dev/agents team believes that an operating system is necessary to make agents work effectively as they proliferate.
“It won’t happen without removing a ton of blockers,” Singleton said. “We need new UI patterns, a reimagined privacy model, and a developer platform that makes it radically simpler to build useful agents. That’s the challenge we’re taking on.”
